How nursing licensing works
A nurse is licensed by the board of nursing in the state where they practice, not nationally, though the Nurse Licensure Compact lets a nurse licensed in one compact state practice in the others. A license record shows whether the nurse is active and in good standing, when the license expires, and whether any discipline is on file. Checking the right state's board is the difference between a verified nurse and an assumption.
